Team Tolkien on Distributed.net

About Distributed.net

Distributed.net is a project to advocate, develop, and deploy distributed computing environments. You can find more information on Distributed.net at their homepage listed to the left.

Currently Distributed.net is focusing on mathmatical problems which lend themselves to a distributed computing environment. The two active projects at this time are the RC5-64 Challenge and the Optimal Golomb Ruler project. The RC5-64 contest's purpose is a response to the RSA Security challenge to crack their RC5-64 encryption scheme. Finding more optimal Golomb Ruler's is of general benefit to the scientific community.

About Team Tolkien

Team Tolkien evolved out of a conversation between Ryan (of Rolozo's Tolkien) and Corvar (of TheOneRing.net) which started on the Tolkien Webmaster's list.

A note about Prizes

Some of the Distributed.net projects have a definate "winner" and that winner receives a prize. Typically these projects are encryption based challenges sponsored by a company (such as the RC5/RSA Security project). In these cases, prize money is divided between Distributed.net, a charity, the winner, and the winner's team. The bulk of the money goes directly to a charity, and if a Team Tolkien member is the winner, the team portion of the money will go towards a charity determined by the winner.

How to participate

  1. Obtain permission of the owner of the computer to participate in Distributed.net. While distributed.net will only use unclaimed processor time (i.e. it will not interfer with or slow down the computer), it will make sure all processor time is utilized.
  2. Download the client from the D.net Client's page.
  3. Install the client. (Instructions on how to do this vary with what platform you are using).
  4. As part of the installation of the Distributed.net client you will be asked for your email address to be used as your Distributed.net ID. Use the same email address for all of the clients you install.
  5. Wait 24 hours. This step is the ideal place to read some of your favorite excerpts of Tolkien's work or browse some wonderful Tolkien inspired artwork.
  6. Go to the Distributed.net stat's page and find your ID. Do this by clicking here, entering your email address in the Participant Search box, and click the "Please mail me my password" button.
  7. Check your email for your password.
  8. Finally, click here to join Team Tolkien. (You will need the password mentioned in the previous 2 steps).
